How does it feel when you can’t even trust your loved ones?
Chhutki (named changed), barely 8 months old, is not even at an age to comprehend what she is going through. On 28 January 2018, her life was changed forever. She was raped and left in a pool of her own blood in her own home while her parents were away. They had left the little girl with her 28 year old cousin who was allegedly behind the horrific crime.
Chhutki’s mother recounted that she found the accuses strolling outside the house saying the child was crying inside. She rushed Chhutki to the hospital and filed a complaint with the police. Since then, the case has sparked an uproar. Now the infant has been shifted to AIIMS.
Since the incident, Chhutki has had three surgeries already and needs more to heal completely. The father is a daily wage worker, making a paltry sum of Rs. 300 on a good day while her mother is employed as help in the houses nearby, so the treatment is a burden on them. They have stopped going to work to be able to care for their child. Chhutki also has a two-year-old sister.
