Politics has once again raised its ugly head in the gangrape case concerning a 18-year-old girl in the Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh. After the death of the victim’s father in police custody, many political parties have targeted the BJP.
The girl had accused the local MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and several others. The police have arrested the MLA’s brother Atul Sengar on the charge of assaulting the girl’s father. The post-mortem report has confirmed the assault. The report said that 14 marks of injuries were found on the father’s body.
The Congress President Rahul Gandhi attacked the Modi government saying, “Beti bachao, khud maare jao.” On this issue, former state chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said that women were being terrorised instead of the criminals in the state. However, the state’s chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that the incident was quite tragic and unfortunate. So far, six policemen have been suspended in this case. Orders for a judicial inquiry have also been issued. The state government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is investigating the matter.
The girl had accused the BJP MLA and his companions of raping her in June last year. But after the matter came to light, the girl suddenly disappeared, after which the families lodged a complaint with the police. Nine days after the complaint, the girl was found in a village in Auraiya district, after which she was brought to Unnao.
The police presented her before the court and recorded her statement. The victim alleged to the police that she had not been allowed to name the BJP legislator in her statement. Ten days later, she was sent to the family members, but she continued to accuse the police constantly. The girl and her family then came to Delhi, where she met all the senior officials of the state so that she could register a case against the BJP MLA and his brother Atul Singh.
But when, the efforts bore no fruit, the girl’s mother approached the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) to file an FIR in this case. On April 3, 2018, the court heard the girl’s appeal, based on her mother’s plea. Then she returned to Unnao to participate in the hearing of the case. According to the family, that evening, the BJP MLA’s brother, Atul Singh, along with his colleagues, troubled the girl’s father. After this, however, the police arrested the girl’s father on charges of possessing illegal weapons.
Then on April 5, 2018, her father was sent to jail. He had accused the MLA’s brother of assault and attempted to implicate him. But no action was taken on their complaint. After this, the girl tried to commit suicide in front of the chief minister’s residence in Lucknow. He also demanded an FIR be lodged against the BJP legislator, after which the entire matter came up. On April 9, however, the girl’s father died in police custody.
