Beauty Jargon Demystified: All You Need To Know About Complicated Cosmetic Terms

Don’t you hate it when you try to read the label of your favourite beauty product and all you chance upon are indecipherable jargons? Beauty jargons can be very complicated and hard to comprehend. To help the everyday consumer, Vitamin Stree has started a graphic series on Instagram decoding the everyday beauty jargons.

In order to make your life easier, here are the most common beauty jargons demystified by Vitamin Stree.

1) SPF

While most of us know this is related to sunscreen, it’s also interesting to note that most people don’t know what the full form is. SPF is the acronym for sun protection factor, and the SPF rating on your sunscreen refers to protection from UVB rays only. The number refers to the level of protection offered – two is the lowest level and 50+ the highest.

2) UVB Protection

In order to completely understand how SPF works, we need to understand what UVB is. UVB stands for short-wave ultraviolet B Rays. These are the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn and are capable of causing skin cancer. So when you are heading out this summer, don’t forget your sunscreen.

3) Keratin

Keratin is the protein that our hair is naturally made of, and hence Keratin protein is used to make hair shinier, smoother and less frizzy. However, a lot of these treatments are usually made up of a chemical like formaldehyde which has been linked to certain cancers. While the quantity is low, it is important to make sure you opt for a formaldehyde-free keratin treatment for your hair! But be warned, none of these treatments are actually chemical-free.
