You cannot wake up someone who is pretending to be asleep is famous proverb which immediately comes to my mind when I see today sorry state of our country.
Here I draw your attention to Asifa gang rape and murder case. In fact to thousand of such cases those are never allowed to reach the courtrooms. On 17 January 2018, Asifa, a 8-year old minor girl, was raped and murdered in Rasana village near Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. The incident made national news when charges were filed against eight men in April 2018.
Thousands of people across the country became voice of voiceless thorough social media, protests, March etc. But what concerns the most is- Are these voices reaching the deaf ears? Why is government ignorant of such heinous crimes? Why no strict laws are made? Why justice is delayed? Why victim is not able to file an FIR immediately without a bribe, influence or harassment?
In recent past Nirbhaya case got justice after 4 years. Death penalty for rapists is definitely what these products of sick mentality deserve but our judicial system should conduct speedy trials in cases like these. Because justice delayed is justice denied. This one case that stood out got verdict, what about thousand more still waiting for justice? The statistics on crime against women is even worse. In every two minutes, a women in India is a victim of a crime. This ongoing issue with violence against women raises the real and serious question of whether India is truly ready for a seat on the global table.
Words cannot do justice certainly an amendment in law is need of an hour. I conclude by saying that India has come across serious crisis where criticizing victim has become a typical mindset. Certain section of society even have guts to justify the horrific crime committed and people like these are threat to progressive thinking of society. Horrendous crime like rape is shame on society. Let us raise our voice.
