Lifter Sanjita Chanu Clinches Gold At The 2018 Commonwealth Games

With the stroke of dusk when every one was asleep she roared, with all the strength she possessed – and with the bravest wings, she conquered the sky, fighting against all odds, repeating history and reminding everyone about her abilities. Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu won India its second gold medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast City, Australia, by bagging the medal in women’s 53 kg weightlifting category at Carrara Sports and Leisure on Friday.

Hailing from the state of Manipur, she started her career in weightlifting in 2006. She stepped into the world of weightlifting with the sole intention of becoming a renowned athlete and for the pride of the nation. She succeeded in this by winning the gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She was the first Indian to win a gold medal on the second day of the competition. She started with a 72 kg weight and straight away lifted 77 kg without dropping any weight in the snatch. To establish a career in sports, you have to start it early – and so did Sanjita, who started wrestling at the age of 12 with determination in her eyes and taking inspiration from N Kunjarani Devi who also hails from Manipur.

The year 2014 marked a tremendous change in her life because her hard work payed off as she won the first gold medal of her career in the 48 kg weightlifting category, and she maintained her pace by bagging another gold medal in this year’s CWG. Once again, it has been proven that “Bharatiya naari sab par bhaari.” Cheers to the Indian tigress for making India proud. May every women take inspiration from her and fulfill their dreams and mark their existence.  As the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had once said, “If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”
