BJP Government Is All Talk And Little Action When It Comes To Development

MUMBAI, INDIA - FEBRUARY 3: Men work on roof-tops to recycle waste in the Dharavi slum on February 3, 2009 in Mumbai, India. The re-development of the Jari Mari slum, situated near the airport of the world's third largest city and India's financial capital, have stalled due to the global economic financial crisis, along with the near-by Dharavi slum. Continuous talk of development by the ruling party has been of no avail. The BJP’s incessant talk about development has started arousing a different level of fury in people’s minds. It seems to have completed its four years with the same discussion about development without actual execution much like the previous government. Where does the BJP stand on electricity, road construction and toilets construction? According to the Saubhagya Data, 12.2 percent of 44.87 lakh households have access to electricity while 3.23 crore households are yet to have any power supply.

Even in a state like Uttar Pradesh, nearly 45 percent households remain deprived of any access to electricity. Then, the hundred percent village electrification assertions are not wholly factual in its strictest sense. The BJP mentions more regularly of attaining the electrification goal, but there is still so much more to be done. When it comes to the road construction, the picture is not quite encouraging. The average construction of roads during the first three years from 2014 to 17 of the Modi government remained as little as 17 km. If we compare this figure with the daily highway construction between 2011 and 14, it comes to 13 km. There is a noticeable increase of measly four kilometres.

The total construction of national highways from the year 2011 to 14 was 12005 km while it remained 18702 km from the year 2014 to 17. Therefore the ruling government’s claim of any distinction in this area holds no ground. Even the construction of the toilets have been less than remarkable. A total of six crore toilets have been built in the last four years. In the next fiscal year, the government wants to construct two crore more toilets as claimed by the Union Rural Development Ministry. The present government has set the target of building 10000 toilets which are above the previous governments’ mark of 5000 toilets. But the target has not been reached. What is the BJP government doing in the name of development? It is high time that we should start questioning our government more actively.
