MENSTRUATION- A CELEBRATION, NOT SUPPRESSION

‘SHE HAS HER PERIODS’….shhhh lower your voice. You cannot shout such secret stuffs outside. Go silently near the concerned person you want to convey this message(!!) with, or make use of sign languages(?).
Funny right??
So this has been going on in many parts of our society till date. Just two cases, taking periods really light as you get a sneeze or cough (Haaaachhhh, it’s over) or making it a really big issue and making the girl experience more pain (Hey don’t sit on the floor, hey no cold water, wear red dress).
In real, it’s just a change in a girl’s body that occurs due to discharge of blood from inner lining of uterus through the vagina. Bleeding lasts for 3-8 days which lessens within a due course of time. Generally women get tiredness, extreme pain and mood swings during these days. So, instead of exaggerating periods, try understanding them during these days.
Actually, why do we suppress women during periods? Ignoring those baseless taboos like, don’t touch food, plants, stay away from family members, still many hidden stuffs are there. They simply term it rules, but they are being followed because their mothers, grand mothers, great grandmothers and everyone told them to do so.  So no one dared to question it, right?( Oh i forgot, when even talking about periods is a sin, how can you question it?)
Anyways let me question here, “Did god tell the mankind that the woman is ‘unpure’, so don’t let her inside my temple?” “What if a woman doesn’t get her periods at all, would she be considered pure then?”, “And why do tv ads portray like, women keep checking their napkins every now and then?” (Then why do you say 8 hours protection in the same advertisement. To check every minute till 8 hours get over?) “Why aren’t guys taught about periods as you teach girls?” and many more.

I have to speak about this point here. No woman does heavy athletic activities or jumping, hill climbing and heavy dance movements, unless it can’t be avoided. TV advertisements show WRONG stuffs like women desire to jump and play on those days, stand upside down( even thinking such things bring pain….please)
Actually periods should be celebrated instead of getting suppressed. Menstruation is the base for everything, sex, child birth, and more importantly what you call as ‘family life’. Menstruation is just an indication and having regular menstrual cycles indicate that the girl’s body is in a correct condition with appropriate hormones.
Just imagine a world without menstruation. Human race would have ended long back, before many generations. And if menstrual blood is a sin or impurity, then all humans are impurities containing 206 bones. Nothing more, nothing less.
The strange thing about India is that, once a girl starts menstruating, they keep grand functions to tell that she has ‘become a complete woman.’ But the very next month when she starts menstruating regularly, she gets different treatment. So is menstruation a one time celebration?
Yes, there are many men who understand women. They support them in all possible ways. It’s all about understanding and caring. Women need more rest, good food and few extra hours of sleep. Not isolation, impurity and other stuffs.
Working women, housewives almost every girl/woman from the age of 13- 50 is facing menstrual problems. They don’t expect anyone to share their pain. They just need to be treated as usual, just with a mix of little more pampering and chocolates. And it is not a pride to tell that, it’s a girl thing and guys don’t need to know about it. If you want girls who are all-rounders, then they too expect guys to know certain basic things.
This menstrual hygiene day (may 28), let’s take an oath to celebrate menstruation and the women who are surrounded by myths of pain, silence and ignorance.
