A Modern Woman

I am a modern woman –
A woman who has brains.
I know what is wrong and right,
I know my boundaries and heights.

I have people who love me,
But their opinions are divided.
Some want me to fight,
Whereas others want me to be quiet.

One wants me to brave all the pressure,
The other wants me to enjoy womanly pleasure.
They want me to rise and shine,
Whereas they also want me to be divine.

Difference in opinions are there,
But it is because they fear.
They just want me to be happy,
As they know about society.

My parents taught me well.
On their teachings I dwell:
They taught me to love my culture,
And also to appreciate others.

I also have a loving lover,
Whose presence gives me power.
He is not a rich brat,
In fact, he is a poor lad.

I am not with him for money,
But because his heart is not stony.
He gives me what I want –
Love, Intellect, Hope and his stand.

I have a mind of my own,
And it speaks in many tones.
Whether you like it or not,
Words will come out of my mouth.

You can abuse me at your best.
You can even rape or molest me,
But you can’t hurt my dignity,
As you don’t have the authority.

My modesty cannot be outraged,
And you cannot decide my destiny.
I solely have authority on my self –
Whether it be my emotions, soul or body…

Because I am a woman of today.
I am a modern woman.
I know when to say yes or no.
I am the woman who knows.
