Is The Specialisation We Pursue In College Really Worth Anything In The Corporate World?

Getting a good job is like aiming a moving target, very difficult to hit the aim. Most of us succeed but some of us don’t. Lakhs of students complete their education every year but only a few of them hits the jobs, why? Lack of skills is the main reason, followed by the personal choices. After completing 3-4 years of graduation, we still lack the necessary skills. Why? Every question has an answer. Our Education System doesn’t focus on the practical skills which are needed to survive the corporate market but just on the theoretical part. For e.g. The professional management courses provide specializations in Marketing, Human Resources, Information Technology, Finance etc.. but can these be really considered as specializations. For an instance, many of the Marketing specialized are unemployed due to lack of basic skills. How to find the prospects, the ways to approach the prospect, how to deal with them, how to crack the deal, how to manage the data are the basic skills required in a marketing professional, which most of them do not have. Our education system is mainly focused on the clothes and the uniform, appearance and clean shave (for males) and the rest. These things are equally important but most important is to make the student specialized for the profession.

Every company wants someone with at least a year experience. But where to get experience from? Internships could be the answer. But No, the internships also requires the skills same as the jobs do. Then what to do? Taking up a supportive courses to gain the skills. Again, the fees for these courses touches the skies and it’s not possible for everyone to pay these fees. This thing does not apply only to management courses, but most of the other courses too.

Our education system must focus on developing the skills, rather help the student just with the text notes. The colleges or the institutions can help the students with the 6-months internships plans while completing the education and also making it mandatory. The syllabus can be updated as the corporate market needs, also the academic syllabus can be integrated with the supportive course syllabus, so when the student is graduated, it is ready to face the corporate markets.
