The trailer for “Veere Di Wedding” was released on April 25. It is definitely one of the most anticipated movies for women this year. This Wednesday, the film released its first song, “Tareefan”. And suddenly, I see people around me feeling differently about the film. What changed all of a sudden?
When the trailer came out, the film was shamed for its language. What I’d really want to know from those who thought the language to be vulgar – how often do you talk like that yourself, or even worse? How often do you not disrespect your mother or your sister through innumerable curses? You find this to be vulgar? What about the domestic abuse happening in some of your own households?
“Tareefan” is a song by Badshah and what has disappointed you, is the fact that it isn’t objectifying women for a change and has men in the background while there are four women in the foreground holding the song together. How difficult is it for some of us to accept a gender swap in reel let alone in real lives?
The actors do not have a problem, the composer, singer or the producer don’t seem to have a problem, then I wonder why the rest of India does? I wonder, why we can’t at least watch the movie first and then decide whether we like the song? Where is your freedom of speech when injustices are being committed against women, children and minority communities every day? One song comes out, assertively choosing to flip a stereotype, and the whole nation goes berserk.
I am not a fan of any of the actors in the video but why can’t we consume entertainment as entertainment? What about when we gave a hall pass to many problematic songs in the past? Is it that important to judge a song on moral grounds simply because women are at the forefront of it?
The director and his team have made a film they wanted to, and it is up to us whether we want to watch it or not. There is nothing more to it, really.
