Atishi Marlena advisor to the Delhi Education minister has been sacked by the Home Ministry order of the Central Government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In almost every home there’s a mother, elder sister or grandmother who sits down children in her family and helps them do homework and help grasp what they learn in the school. The personalized attention and care given to a tender mind helps one enjoy the joy of learning. Life is an endless learning. On 16 April 2018 the BJP Government at the Centre sacked this hardworking mother, sister, grandmother for lakhs of Delhi Government schools kids.
Swati Maliwal ended her 10 days Indefinite fast demanding “Punishment to Child Rapists within 6 months”, Fast Track Courts, more Forensic Labs, Recruitment of 66000 Police personnel which Delhi Police is short of is ignored by the Central Government & all of its ministers. Centre in an ordinance to be promulgated amended POSCO act to have death penalty. Chunk of demands still remain unaddressed. Her mountain moving work at the Delhi Commission for Women DCW has been applauded worldover by media, diplomats & non-governmental organizations. Women prefer the 181 helpline as their helping light in time of distress.
The woman pioneering Shikha शिक्षा is sacked, the woman steering Women rights, security & safety सुरक्षा demands are ignored. This is certainly not the New India which we want to achieve let alone making India’s capital the best and safest.
Examples where figures fuel the fact: a Delhi Government school saw inflow of 900 students from nearby private schools. Sector 21 Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Rohini saw kids and parents opting the sarkari school over private schools which charged steep fees. DCW under Swati Maliwal is the most active and effective women commission in India whose work beams out towards the whole India where other Women Commissions look silent bodies. Statistics which show Delhi Commission for Women is the most active and effective Women Commission in India.
‘Government schools’ think of them and often the image of a neglected, dull and dilapidated building comes to mind. A child in such Government school will never feel proud of it and the receptors in its brain will never show interest to learn. In the last 3 years backed by the highest budgetary allocation to Education at 26% in the country and maybe in the World everything changed for Delhi Government schools.
When pics of Hemu Kalani Delhi Government school went viral with the swanky new classrooms, labs and SmartBoards and kids along with their teacher posing for an energetic group photo; many thought it was a school from Singapore. While it was a school in Delhi’s famous Lajpat Nagar market. When I visited this school to see for myself the SmartBoards, super Infra and perhaps match the excitement of those kids the Principal of the school told me that it was his and Atishi Marlena’s dream school. My German Institut has Smart Boards. When I see Delhi Government schools having Smart Boards and swimming pools, it fills me with pride. The FIFA certified football stadium and International standard AstroTurf Hockey stadiums in rural Delhi Government schools are giant leap. Never again we as a nation want to hear ‘a country of 125 crore people finds it so difficult to win 1 Gold medal at the Olympics’: for that infrastructural investments like these are crucial. Atishi took ₹1 per month as honorarium but she weaved dreams, stitched together the aspirations into reality for Lakhs of Delhi’s parents and kids who wanted better future through Education. She took One Rupee but her work and impact on Delhi Education was One in a Million.
This exposes BJP’s Anti-women mindset. That at the echelons of the power circles it doesn’t suits them that a talented, independent woman is changing the system (Education) and crucially transforming the present of Kids which beholds the future of any progressive nation. After virtually chasing out the rockstar banker Raghuram Rajan out of his position as RBI Governor comes this. Talent didn’t find greater difficulty ever than now to be part of Governance. Some used to deride that AAP Arvind Kejriwal Delhi Government doesn’t have any Woman ministers but let me tell. Lakhs of people gathered on Rajpath in the aftermath of Nirbhaya Gangrape protests. Crores were glued to News on TVs & Internet during that time desperately wanting ‘Enough is Enough’ and the situation to change towards improvement. But the nation stands at the same juncture with all those demands still unfulfilled. Even the 1000 crores Nirbhaya Fund remains 100% yet to be utilized; chunk of it is still unspent. Who are we assuring in our subconsciousness that all is well? It is still the same. For our Education & Security. Rise up, be heard, support–it’s now or never.
