Maybe it’s time I start listening to my inner voice!
The above words are what I heard a day before I graduated. Things tend to get really serious after your numbers say that you’re employable. We fortunately spend leaps of years and frivolous cash to get ourselves a degree or even more. This marks the gateway into what is called a ‘settled life’. For most Indians, this is not a new term. Right from the time we were children till we turn adults, we’ve been taught to understand the sequence of life and build a script around it – which, in most cases, eventually ends in marriage, followed by further compromises and sacrifices.
In its true sense, this resonates with the ideology in “Fight Club” which taught us to fight for ourselves – in a generation with no motto or struggle, with a bunch of trained machines trying to fill the shoes that we never could.
Everyone of us have dreams, but soon, they becomes just another dream while it is textured within the wall of reality. We soon realise this and move on with our lives of guardianship and responsibilities. Most of the people call it fate – and some blame it on their inheritance. But within ourselves, we all know where it really went wrong and who should be blamed for it.
But it’s really surprising to see how fast things change around us – so fast that we tend to forget to fight for what we had opted. It still isn’t easy to invest time in searching for ‘the calling’ and to do something that can fill our soul. But as the days pass, we are burdened with economic dependence and social statures.
This makes me question the entire purpose of life. Should it end the way it started, or is there something more to do with it? It’s just another day or just another opportunity wasted, but it’s also another life wasted, trying to build on the foundation that was perhaps never really there.
I write. I will, till my last breath drops.
