Yanny Or Laurel: What Is The Fuss All About?

This debate has reached the white house, Ivanka Trump said it’s clearly Laurel.

This question is driving the internet crazy… Whether it’s Laurel or Yanny

You hear the clip and at once you will hear Laurel and for another moment you might hear Yanny. It might have amazed and you would have felt as if its magic or you need an appointment with your ENT specialist but wait… The scientist has an answer for these hearing discrepancies.

It all started with Georgia High School student, Katie Hetzel studying the word “laurel” for her literature class and decided to look it up on vocabulary.com.

“I thought I was losing it,” Hetzel said. “I clicked the audio button to tell me a word to spell and I hear ‘Yanny’ and I was like, this isn’t one of my vocabulary words.”

The high school freshman posted her findings on Instagram. Soon enough, the internet worked its magic and the debate turned explosive.

The clip is distorted and it has a lot of high-frequency information in it more than usual and a person might be better in hearing under high frequency. This clip might be like a recording of the recording and it missed some low-frequency information important to understand what the speech sounds are. People who are more attuned to the high frequencies are picking up on things that make it sound more like Yanny. If you’re not picking up on those higher frequencies then it sounds more like Laurel.

One Twitter user proved that by adjusting the bass levels of the original recording, the word seems to shift. But what could alter what you hear are your headphones or audio equipment. Mediocre speakers don’t usually play both quality bass and treble. So, if you’re listening on your phone, laptop speakers or through cheap headphones, you might hear something different than with a high-quality sound system.

So cancel the appointment with your ENT specialist, magic is decoded.
