Once upon a time in school we were made to study a subject called Environmental Science on compulsory basis however today when I sit to write this article I wonder how many of us could do justice to the subject at all. EVS, as I remember was a very informative subject that detailed on how to save environment to save Earth. I would not want to write much as we all are aware what critical situation we are standing at. I am jotting down few points that I feel as a responsible citizen of India. India still have some forested land which needs to be intensely protected instead of chopping the trees away in the name of development. If we do not live at all what good is this development for? Who are these development meant to service if the human race extincts and without trees how would we even breathe fine? The huge part of the population today suffers from breathing distress due to the air pollution. It is important that Government, both State as well as Centre, focusses on the wellbeing of it’s subject and stop chopping off trees vehemently. In West Bengal there are some 4000 trees in a place named Jessore road which are notified to chop off for development. As per statistics in the past few years West Bengal is recorded as one of the most polluted state and now if one among this 4000 trees are cut off that will cause havoc however our leaders are only keen to make developments to earn credit in the Global market with zero clue who in future will enjoy this development at all if the World perishes due to the evergrowing rate of Pollution. I am sure other states should be facing similar tragedy. We as a democratic country should use the gift of democracy and protest intensely against such disgrace brought to our environment. It is dissapointing to note that the climate have changed so adversely in past 5-6 years with amount of rainfall decreasing at an alarming rate. We are forgetting, our’s a third world country and many people still do not have homes to live, they make their ends meet by working for hours and sleep under trees at night. We cannot be this harsh at them. This is against violation of environment laws including human’s rights to life. The whole concept of development is still a jargon for common people of this country as we don’t see much however we surely see a lot of trees being chopped off and other environmental hazard caused in the name of development . This be my open letter to the Government that’s trying to do so much development – with rate of unemployment risen to a height that’s untouched since last 45 years, we commoners do not want such development. Please save us the misery and plant more trees instead. That is the only solution to the increased rate of Pollution.
