Delhi University (DU) released its second cut-off list late in the night on June 24, 2018. After more than 15,000 admissions on the basis of the first cut-off itself, more than 5,000 students managed to secure a place in DU colleges after the publication of the second cut-off list.
According to a report by the Indian Express, many DU colleges like SRCC, LSR, Hindu, did not announce the second cut-off list for many courses as seats were filled right after the first list came out. The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that this year, there were 1,44,248 male applicants, 1,34,297 female applicants, and 29 other applicants for admissions.
With so many students hoping to study in the prestigious colleges in DU, the second cut-off was a break, as the drop in the cut-offs ranged between 0.25 to 2.5 percentage points for subjects like economics and English, while it varied between 0.25 to 5 percentage points for the highly-coveted course in psychology.
Unlike the day after the release of the first cut-off list where the process was filled with glitches, the admission process went smoothly after the release of the second list.
University officials reported that the colleges were asked to release ‘realistic’ cut-offs for 56,000 seats in DU.
While last year, the highest cut-off was 99.66 % for BSc (Hons.) in Electronics in SGTB Khalsa College and 99% for BA(Hons.) in Political Science for Khalsa colleges, the cut-offs this year are a tad lesser. The highest cut-off this year is 98.75% for BA (Programme) and 98.25% for BA (Hons.) in Psychology in Lady Shri Ram College, while the Delhi College of Arts and Commerce saw a cut- off of 98.50% for BA (Hons,) in Journalism this year.
After the second cut-off, admissions for economics went on in more than 90% of the colleges that offered the course. Admissions for BCom (Hons.) was open in 51 colleges.
Similarly, English (Hons) was open for admission at 47 colleges. At Kamla Nehru College, the cut-off dropped by 2% and it came down to 94.5%. At Hindu College, the cut-off was 97.5%, while at Hans Raj College, it dropped from 97.25% to 96.5%.
The Honours course in Mathematics was offered in 29 colleges after the second cut-off, while admissions in nine colleges were closed after the first list. At Gargi College, the cut-off came down from 97% to 95.5%, while at Kirori Mal College, the cut-off was 96% – and, at LSR, it was 96.50%, a drop of 0.25%.
With more than 2.70 lakh students who have already made their payments, the admissions have now been closed after the second list. The third cut-off list will be released on June 30, 2018.
