‘Veere Di Wedding’: Does Bollywood Really Understand Feminism?

The only thing the filmmakers got right were the promotions. “Not a Chick flick”. “Veere Di Wedding” shows women in a new light, a story of four women, through thick and thin, ups and down.

Feminism has just become a buzzword to Bollywood. From Kareena Kapoor Khan’s comments like “I believe in equality. I won’t say I am a feminist,” to Bollywood’s token feminism (posting pictures with sanitary pads for movie promotions), “Veere Di Wedding” was another addition to this club. To them, women empowerment is about objectifying men and comments like “if men can abuse, why can’t we” make this a setback.

While this movie has four women as the central character and two women as a producer, whereas the men occupy a secondary position which according to actors make it women-centric, it stills fails the Bechdel test.

Where the female leads in movies like “Raazi”, “Hichki”, “NH10” are trying to bring justice to the female protagonists, “Veere Di Wedding” is just a hiccup, we still have a long way to go.
