Delhi University (DU) will release the second cut-off list tomorrow, that is on June 25, after filling a record 25% of seats on the basis of the first cut-off list itself. Last year, for example, only 2,201 students had been admitted to the varsity based on the first list while this year, according to a DU official quoted by PTI, out of over 56,000 seats, 15,245 seats were filled which was a record-breaking number. One can’t be sure with what to ascribe this almost seven times increase in the number of admissions of the first list this year compared to the first list of the last year, but students in general have hailed the relatively ‘realistic’ cut-off percentages as the reason this time around.
The second cut-off list was released late night on Sunday, and the second leg of admissions are to take place between Monday (June 25, 2018) to Wednesday (June 27, 2018). Students had been waiting for the second cut-off in the hope of cancelling their first admissions and taking new admissions in colleges based on the second list. Even though the maximum number of applicants out of nearly 3 lakh registrations for admission to Delhi University’s undergraduate courses are from the National Capital Region, a lot of students from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Haryana have also applied for admission.
Most on-campus and off-campus colleges have said that the cut-offs might dip marginally for popular courses such as B.Com (Hons) and Economics (Hons) but other subjects can see bigger dips. Last week, 1,929 candidates took admission in BA (Prog), while in B.Com (Hons), 1,606 seats were filled, with the third most popular course being BA (Hons) Political Science, where 1,260 seats were filled. The other top courses were BA (Hons) History where 1,075 seats were filled and B.Com where 1,068 seats were filled, the final data stated.
Top colleges such as Hindu College admitted 946 students, Ramjas admitted 810, Gargi College took in 769 and Miranda House 630 students, an official said. Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) will bring out a second cut-off list for both the subjects it offers but the dip won’t be more than 0.25 percentage points, principal Simrit Kaur said.
Students have been hoping that June 19 won’t be repeated in the admission process after the second list is announced. The first day of admissions on Tuesday had been stalled because of technical glitches. University officials had said with over 50,000 students logging in to the system at the same time in the morning, the servers had slowed down. According to a report in NDTV on June 19, which was Day 1 of admissions, the Delhi University’s server came under severe pressure and the DigiLocker, a government-owned public cloud storage where certificates and documents were stored, was not integrated with the varsity portal.
Those students who wish to cancel their admissions will be required to first withdraw the application from the college they have already been admitted to, acquire the cancellation slip from the college authorities and submit it along with the original documents to the new college as a fresh application. The applicants will not be allowed to reverse the cancellation.
