Karnataka CM Delivers On His Promise To Waive Farmer Loans

Karnataka’s chief minister HD Kumaraswamy certainly has a message for the farmers through his measures. It has even helped the farmers realise that his loan-waiver promise was not merely a political stunt. It had also been made with the right intention and a real desire.

This kind of intervention will not only help the farmers, it will also raise his political esteem. Furthermore, in this light, it would be worth noting that ‘no new cars and/or office revamp for ministers in the Karnataka Assembly’ seems to be the major directive in Kumaraswamy’s planned cost-cutting exercise. He has been following such steps to control extra and unnecessary expenditure.

These restrains come just days after the new state government reportedly announced its plan to waived farmers’ loans.

His aim was to ensure that the vast majority of farmers did not create an unnecessary fuss over the delay in fulfilling of the promise. It’s only natural that the CM had to make an unavoidable, vocal promise in response to the farmers’ agonies.

If the farmers had waited a little longer, it’s possible that they would have made a far greater din. So, a practised politician like him would of course try to reassure the farmers that there was nothing wrong or dishonest with his promise. This could be the reason why he executed this plan so soon after the government was elected.

However, Kumaraswamy was also aware of the fact that the Opposition was making a spectacle out of the delayed execution of the loan-waiver promise. Therefore, it’s equally possible that the move was a placatory one, aimed at stopping the Opposition from going nuts over the issue.
