Menstrual Taboos Are Actually Age-Old Traditions. Let’s Smash Them!

The taboos and myths around menstruation are actually age-old traditions which we have been following without having the guts to question them. These superstitions are passed through successive generations for centuries – and still, we follow them blindly.

Even in the confines of our families, we often restrict ourselves from entering the temples, touching pickles, food or even from entering the kitchen. This despite the fact that science has proved these superstitious practices to be wholly wrong as far as their rationale is concerned. Yet, these practices are so deeply rooted in our minds that we end up following them, at least five days every month.

The culture of silence around menstruation is so complete that most of us are unaware of the adverse effects on our health due to the lack of knowledge on menstruation. The taboos further aggravate the situation, making it impossible to discuss menstruation in public. Girls and women often resort to self-medication to postpone or prepone their cycle so that they can attend religious or cultural activities at home. This puts them in even more risk, as they don’t realise that they are disturbing their hormonal cycle, which is supposed to be a very natural process.

Ensuring the wellness of women during their menstrual cycles can be achieved by eradicating such baseless taboos and speaking freely about menstruation. It is high time we realise that there is nothing wrong in talking about menstruation. It is a very natural phenomenon that happens to all women in this world, without which life cannot exist.
