The defeat of the Modi led NDA government in the Lok Sabha bypoll election in Kairana and Noorpur says a lot of things. Politically, both these places were very important for the BJP. If we look more into the matter, it assumes all the more importance because Kairana is the place where most sugarcane farmers come from.
Both PM Modi and CM Yogi had assured the sugarcane farmers and made many promises during their flamboyant election campaigns. Even the 2014 election manifesto of the BJP spoke of helping out the sugarcane farmers.
The sugarcane farmers are facing the payment crisis for a long time. But actually no proper action has been taken by the government towards solving the grievances of sugarcane farmers. Various advertisements have been printed in newspapers by the government regarding justice being done to the farmers.
This bypoll election in both these constituencies shows the anger of the farmers and demonstrates that only promising people things will not work – promises need to be accomplished.
The Modi government should draw serious lessons from these results for the sake of the 2019 election. This time, the BJP will not be able to allege the Congress party and others of wrongdoing. They need to show the achievements of the Modi government. The BJP and Modi need to focus on developing their own report card.
