In Our Outrage Over ‘Quantico’, We Are Failing To Address The Issues That Matter

Priyanka Chopra, the national superstar, has not just made her name in the West through her music videos. She’s also a lead actress in the series “Quantico”. She has been applauded and praised for her role. Not only has she been an inspiration to us by making her name in the West, she is also very active in social causes (for instance, when she visited Rohingya refugees) and has actively supported women empowerment in India.

The latest episode of “Quanitco” is about terrorism, where Hindus are the actual terrorists but try to frame it on Muslims of Pakistan. The series also included a representation of the rudraksh mala that offended a number of people. Priyanka and ABC Channel were maligned a lot due to this. She was attacked online by many people for participating in a plot-line that shamed Hindus and India. The whole feud ended when both Priyanka and the ABC Channel apologised through their twitter handles publicly.

Religion and terrorism are indeed very sensitive topics in India. We are very easily offended when such topics come up in our news headlines, but the question we really need to ask ourselves is whether this is something we should be getting angry about. So what if she participated in a fictitious plot-line on TV? Thousands of such things keep on happening on television.

Why does a fictitious plot-line on religion and terrorism hurt us way more that an issue like rape (or even on-ground hooliganism or religious marginalisation) that actually hurt the people in our country? After all, many people in our country still blame women when they get raped and even shun her for life .

Such questions are necessary to be asked. From the “Padmavati” controversy to the “Quantico” fiasco, why is our country not engaged more in solving the actual problems that make us suffer?

Is a fictitious TV series more important the depressing realities of rape, corruption and religious fights in our country ?
