I belong to a typical middle-class Marwari family. Growing up, whenever mom had her periods, she had to leave doing kitchen work.
Like many families, our family considered girls and women as impure during those five days. Seeing all this happen I wondered who will cook for us?
A novice, I began cooking and taking care of our home kitchen, from Class 5, replacing my mom in her kitchen duties. By the time I was Class 7, I was managing the kitchen independently and cooking for all.
By then, I had got habituated with cooking. I did it with love and passion, and I remember how amazed my mom was when she saw me making perfectly round chapatis.
Now, I’m 19 and a confident cook, and I dream of having my own theme café, someday.
If you’re wondering what I’ve done to fulfil my dream, there’s so much to share. To me, cooking is an art. The more you practice, the better it gets.
Managing my college and studies, I cook daily, polishing my cooking skill or trying a new recipe, even inventing new ones. I’m especially fond of making desserts, mostly cakes and cupcakes.
Though I love spicy food, my fondness for desserts inspires me to churn out sweet, yummy delights. Now, I have my own YouTube channel named ‘Trupti Joshi Recipes’.
Whenever I cooked or created a dish, I craved some feedback. I would post photos on various platforms. It was on Instagram that I noticed about SHEROES – Communities for women. Out of sheer curiosity, I downloaded the SHEROES app and joined the active Cooking Community. Here I found enthusiastic cooks like me.
Filled with a zeal, I posted my recipes with photos. When positive responses of praise poured in I was on cloud nine. Filled with happiness I was tremendously inspired to cook more, experiment more and share more.
It is like being part of a family of cooks and food lovers. Then, one day I received a comment from Sairee Chahal praising me. Wondering who she was, I googled and was speechless. Sairee Chahal, is the Founder of SHEROES! Her comment made my day; I felt recognised.
Also, the day I moderated the Cooking Community was the best day of my life. I was elated because I got an opportunity to prove myself to the world. It gave me scope to share my YouTube videos and interact with my community friends. It was like having an identity of my own. Almost a chef-like status!
There are girls like me who hail from small towns and dream big. We’re filled with aspirations to shine in life. It gets tough when we don’t receive the support from our family members. I dislike it when parents don’t support their child, especially girls, in the struggle to achieve their goals. It’s time our society thought progressively for girls.
Currently, I’m doing B.Sc. in zoology. I wish to become a lecturer and earn enough money and save from my earnings so that my dream of opening a theme café is fulfilled. I want to see girls like me flying high successfully. My message is NEVER, NEVER stop dreaming!
