Stop Bringing Up False Rape Charges And Undermining Sexual Violence Against Women

We live in a place called India, where with our flawed judicial system, it’s near difficult to get a sex offender convicted. The character of the victim gets questioned while struggling over the intention of the accused.

Looking at the new emerging trend in social media, every time there is a discussion on social media on sexual violence against women, there is always that guy who turns up and talks about false rape charges against men.

Where is the outrage about the women who never get justice? If you look at the statistics, it proves that the number of rape cases is more than false charges.

Of course, there are false rape charges filed against men, but one shouldn’t use that to undermine the discussion on sexual violence against women. If you want to fight against false charges against men, you can take up the fight separately but never use it as against women talking about sexual abuses.

Helpline centres for women after the Nirbhaya incident have been closed down in most areas across the country due to lack of support and funding from Government. Without this vital support, we can’t tackle the sexual assault against women.

In one incident in a metro, a group of guys were harassing a woman. When one of us called up the control room, the police turned up and those men ran away. Instead of helping her, the police called her a ‘loose woman’ and said that she was asking for it wearing ‘these types of’ clothes.

I have heard countless stories like this, where the victim gets blamed for making the accusation instead of getting support. Looking at this kind of situation, we can’t mix up the false accusation with the actual one.

I am personally glad that there are movements being gathered up against false rape accusations, no one should easily get away by doing something like that.

For 6% woman making false charges, we shouldn’t undermine 94% of them gaining all the strength to make their voice heard against an ordeal. Perhaps we should restructure our judicial system so that we can bring justice to thousands of women and girls who have been dismally let down by the system, and we can also tackle false rape charges.
