Since he became a Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has been viewed as a showstopper in both India and a, albeit with some critics in tow. I don’t mean to generalise, but I feel the criticism is strongest in states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala where he’s been held responsible for not lending water to Tamil Nadu. He has also being held accountable for not speaking up strongly against women’s issues, always being on world tours and also forcing students to write the NEET. But in this article, I thought, I’d focus on the PM’s achievements which are often not lauded enough:
- The Demonetisation and GST drives were met with criticisms like never before, but India is now the world’s fastest growing economy at a growth rate of 7.4% as per a recent IMF report.
- Lighting up our villages – every Indian village now has electricity which is a considerable achievement, and this was achieved in two years time.
- The unified taxation policy of GST could increase India’s tax revenue by 1 lakh crores in the 2017-18 fiscal year!
- 28 kilometres of National Highway is getting constructed in our country every day.
- The Ujjwala policy could provide two crore deserving households free LPG connection.
- The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) a flagship scheme for ‘funding the unfunded’i.e. extension of affordable credit could benefit 7.5 crore individuals within a very short span.
- The country has moved from development of women to development led by women. The Modi cabinet has six women which is four more than the previous government.
- Another standout success is the Jan Dhan Yojana, which has created over 31 crore new bank accounts, the direct benefit transfer (DBT) scheme, which has significantly cut pilferage.
- The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) was legislated in 2016. By taking bank NPAs head-on, the IBC is proving to be a game-changer. Total bank NPAs are around Rs 9 lakh crore.
I stated these facts to suggest that we need not shame our PM all the time and also focus on his achievements!
