What Writing For A Year On Campus Watch Has Taught Me

Youth Ki Awaaz was a platform that I came across back in my first year of college. As a budding writer, I always hoped to write for a university-related newspaper or website. In the second year, this dream came true when I joined Campus Watch.

The one reason why I always wanted to be a part of the writing team of Campus Watch was that I wanted to go out of my comfort zone and test the waters outside. Writing about all the things happening in colleges, covering the fests happening across Delhi University did seem like something that was different and new for me. So, when I got the opportunity to start working with Campus Watch, I grabbed it.

I had always considered Campus Watch to be a platform that had its focus on the happenings and events on campuses. As I started working here, I realised it was not restricted to only university news. They were readily accepting my articles that were about varied ideas. From writing about being away from home on Diwali to coping with stress during final year at college, I think Campus Watch gave me a chance to write and learn a lot of new things.

Before joining Campus Watch, I had been writing for a very long time. But, I stuck to fictional pieces of poetry and proses and tried to experiment in that field. The one major thing that I learnt while writing here was that it is very important to tap into the topics which the audience, in this case, students would like to read about.

Being a college student, it was very easy for all of us to relate to articles on attendance issues, long list of permissions needed for fests and what not. The other thing that I learnt was that it’s very important to put the news out ‘now’ for the public to read at the right time. Timing plays a very important role because if something has occurred, it is necessary to speak about it at that time to garner a good amount of interest among the people.

Campus Watch has given me friends and mentors like Azra, who taught me so many new things like putting across a certain piece in different ways and who also, gave me time and was patient with me. As I am graduating this month, I feel like I am taking a lot of good things that I learnt while working on this platform. It has been a pleasure working here and I hope Campus Watch reaches new heights every year, and that Youth Ki Awaaz always remains the loudest.
