‘A Girl Is More Responsible For Rape Than A Boy’: Before Judging Me, Read This

What would your first reaction be when you hear someone say that rape is a woman’s fault? It might agitate you, understandably.

All of us are aware of the increasing cases of rape, molestation and sexual assaults against women in India. These incidents definitely scare us. But have we ever analysed what provokes someone to commit such a heinous crime?

In 2012, the December gang-rape case in Delhi shook the conscience of the entire Indian subcontinent. I was stunned by some of the responses I saw and it took no time for me to conclude that these rapists aren’t humane.

What can be the reason for them to commit these acts?

Some say that the perpetrators are as ordinary as you and me, the problem lies in their upbringing and thought process. Most of them think of women as an object that can be used for sexual pleasure and then disposed of like garbage.

Their idea of masculinity is twisted

Men who commit such crimes often tend to think of themselves as the superior gender and women are gladly accepting the roles of being a submissive victim. Why can’t they take charge of their own safety and unite together to fight it out?

When the gang rape took place in Delhi (India). It was reported that a lot of passers-by failed to acknowledge the fact that the girl who was raped is naked and someone is supposed to cover her body.

Men don’t understand what consent is.

“After you speak to [the rapists], it shocks you — these men have the power to make you feel sorry for them. As a woman that’s not how you expect to feel. I would almost forget that these men have been convicted of raping a woman. In my experience, a lot of these men don’t realize that what they’ve done is rape. They don’t understand what consent is.”

Oops! Did I just say SEX?

We have a very socially conservative attitude when it comes to sex and sex education. If you can do it regularly, why can’t you speak about it?

Sex education is omitted in most school curriculums; legislators feel such topics could ‘corrupt’ youth and offend traditional values. “Parents won’t even say the words like penis, vagina, rape or sex. If they can’t get over that, how can they educate young boys or even girls?

Are excuses enough to justify this?

If we met these type of men, I assure that they will deny the occurrence of any sort of sexual activity between them and the victim. I thought there were only some who said that we are repenting. Others had found a way to put their actions into some justification, neutralize, or blame action onto the victim.

Can a man really say that?

Somewhere I heard this type of statement when 1 of the rapists was reported to have said, “Yes I feel bad, I ruined her life. Now she is no longer a virgin, no one would marry her. I would accept her, I will marry her when I come out of jail.” Do statements like this suffice the crime and the deed that has already been done?

Last but not least.

I really hope for my work to get the much-deserved appreciation and want more and more people who think that women are “his feet shoe ” to read this because they need to know the fine line between YES and NO.

I hope to publish my research about these type of shameless incidents in the coming months.
