Bollywood’s Got College Life In India All Wrong

For Bollywood, college is nothing but a resort with ‘pretty’ girls and boys flaunting themselves in the latest fashion. Not to forget the extravagant dance contests and flamboyant parties, with no room for studies.

Reality check: Real life is miles away from reel life. Yup, college is no KJo movie.

The Mercedes Dream

In movies, you see the hero getting out a Mercedes with a driver at his beck and call. Let’s not forget Hrithik Roshan and his dashing red car in Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham. If you’re an actual college student, you would be considered lucky if you manage to find a decent spot to stand in the public bus or metro. On top of that, you need to listen to the rants of the conductor just because you have a student pass.

Romance From Day One

For all those expecting to find ‘the one’ on day one, you are in for a big surprise. Because there will be no ‘books falling and eyes meeting’ and definitely no background music. In fact, the whole day would be packed with orientations and class introductions and you are most likely to meet those you’d be making memories with to cherish for a lifetime.

Ah, The Carefree Life. Or Is It?

Most movies portray students as people with the only aim to have fun with no care in the world. In reality, most students are a part of a hectic rat race to find their place. Also, almost all movies portray parents as people who don’t care what their kids are up to and listen to all their whims. Try being like that in real life and you might just get thrown out of the house.

College’s Next Top Model

Coming to the dress code, while movies show girls flaunting short skirts and boys gallivanting through the corridors in their leather pants, the shocking truth is that most colleges have a strict dress code or uniform. So make sure to go through the dress code before filling out your wardrobes.

The Professors

Unlike in movies professors have no interest whatsoever in your private life and will most definitely not help you with your love life. On the same note, unlike Virus from “3 Idiots”, professors aren’t really that scary. Some can be a bit cranky but they’re mostly helpful and harmless (yes, you can let out that sigh of relief).

And hitting on teachers is definitely off limits, you might even be expelled for that.

The Duel

It’s typical to see movie heroes take up petty fights and end up victorious without a single scar. Well, try that in college and you have earned yourself a ticket to the principal’s room or most likely the hospital. And it’s highly unlikely that you would get into a fight just like that, after all, people there are just students and not thugs.

And The ‘Stalk Her Till She Falls In Love’

Try persistent stalking and detestable flirting in real life and I can assure you that love is the last thing you will ever find.

So that’s the sad truth folks.

I believe it’s time filmmakers made a little bit more effort to actually understand what Indian colleges are like.
