Cosmetic Treatments Abroad: Worth the Risk?

There is an increasing number of people who are seeking plastic surgery in the modern age. This rise is both due to their efforts to fit in with today’s standards of beauty, but also because the availability of this surgery is better than ever. If you to change your appearance – in whatever capacity – then you will be able to do it; even if you want to look like a cat.

However, obviously this surgery comes with a cost and this is where many people look for cheaper alternatives. Namely, they decide to seek the surgery abroad where costs are often much, much, cheaper. This drop in price is, of course, not without its own risks. So, what do you need to consider before going ahead with seeking cosmetic treatments abroad?

Aftercare

Probably the most important consideration for the dangers of medical procedures abroad is that of the aftercare. If you have surgery abroad, then travel thousands of miles home you will be without access to the immediate aftercare which you may come to vitally need. And, unfortunately, medical professionals in your home country may be unwilling to provide this to you as they fear meddling with a ‘botched’ procedure.

This means that your ‘cheap’ alternative could end up costing you much more, as you then have to pay a professional in your home country to additional care or even a whole new procedure (depending on what complications you experience post-op). Which means you could either be left seriously ill, financially deficit or much, much, worse.

Insurance

If you go overseas seeking surgery with the expectation that your regular travel insurance will cover complications, issues or a need to stay longer due to your surgery, then you may be very surprised when it does not. The fact is that many travel insurance companies state explicitly what your insurance covers, so it is up to you to ensure that your insurance does or does not cover your trip and its associated risks.

Of course, there is the option to pick up a specific ‘medical tourism’ insurance, but this can be costly and simply make the overall process of a medical procedure abroad even more expensive. Often, you may find the price is much more cost-effective if you stay at home in the UK.

General Safety Concerns

Is the surgeon accredited or the facility certified? Do you have plans for safe travel both there and back again? How will your recovery work once you are back in your home country? You need to do your research before going ahead with any surgery as the fact is it could be a lot less safe than the marketing or whatever enticed you there in the first place have to lead you to believe. Being over cautious is often the best option when it comes to any issues you may fear encountering as you seek treatment abroad.

At the end of the day, having surgery abroad is perfectly possible and can be very successful. However, to do this you need to use the right plan of action and take the appropriate advice. Don’t be enticed for the simple allure of a dirt cheap price point. Research, insure and ensure that you will have access to the right level of care at all stages of the process.
