If These Are ‘Achhe Din’, The Bad Days Were Better

A potential threat to India as a country and as an institution has been looming since 2014 which has been unknowingly accepted by a vast majority of the population.

Extreme adoration of a single political leader has outweighed the practice of making political judgements based on merit.

For some, saffron has become the paramount part of the tricolour.

People are busy appreciating PM Modi’s foreign policy and at the same time, ignoring the plight of India’s internal system of governance. The youth are busy glorifying the future prospects of India while failing to analyze the way Delhi has failed in providing adequate employment opportunities to them.

Nowadays, it has become common for an Indian to engage in beef-related debates rather than develop a rational attitude and identify the real agenda behind the politicisation of such issues.

Andrew Jackson once said, “All the rights secured to the citizens under the Constitution are worth nothing, and a mere bubble, except guaranteed to them by an independent and virtuous Judiciary.” Sadly in India, the independence of the judiciary has lost its vigour under the present system whereby the Chief Justice seems to be a puppet in the government’s hands.

Retaliatory and separatist communalism has found expression whereas secular voices have been suppressed. Communal riots have become normal for the people and the popularity of communal leaders has reached an all-time high.

The central government has manipulated major media giants in its favour and the media, the fourth pillar of democracy, is being constantly used to serve political interest that has been detrimental to the people.

Youth politics, especially under the banner of religion, has been successful in sowing communal seeds among the masses.

Moreover, the blame for such a deteriorated state of India should not be placed upon the Indian masses. Owing to the high rate of illiteracy, unemployment and poverty, they are bound to accept any perspective that is being forced upon them by those in power.  The real culprits are the intellectuals, political leaders, spokespersons, newspapers editors and media giants who have knowingly acknowledged and appreciated all false political claims and propaganda for their self-interest and short-term monetary gain.

It is high time that people’s perception be set in the right direction, to prevent our democracy from being transformed into an autocracy.
