With 3 Students Committing Suicide In Delhi, We Need To Ask If Marks Are Everything

Last month, board exam results of class 10 and class 12 were declared. The cyber cafes were full of students who were eagerly waiting for their results.

After the results were seen, students who topped any stream were on top of the world. Meghna Shrivastava topped the class 12 CBSE results. There was some confusion as to which college or institute the freshers should apply to. Such was the case for toppers. But what about the others? The students who scored below 90% do not find themselves mentioned anywhere. They are denied admissions into reputed institutes. Many students go into depression, some even contemplate suicide.

In Delhi, already 3 students from class 10 committed suicide. This begs the question – are marks everything? Absolutely not. Rather, it is one’s skills that matter. Scoring 90% or above is the benchmark that most of the colleges and universities have set in order to make students work hard. But we can’t ignore the fact that everybody is unique.

The young generation of today does not possess a ‘well-formed mind’, rather they possess a ‘well-filled mind’. I’ve heard of many toppers who are struggling to get placement in reputed companies. The reason is that they never acquired the required skills for a particular job or career. Most of the schools and colleges are just talking about marks and grades. There are very few schools and colleges who talk about developing skills. Most of the freshers who apply for programming jobs do not even know the basic fundamentals of programming.

Okay, these were about students with an intellect. But what about those students who have learning disabilities? Do they not have any future? There are many examples of persons with learning disabilities that are well-known today. One such example is Albert Einstein. He had a had a learning disability called dyslexia and yet, he is known as one of the greatest physicists of all time.

So to conclude, marks are important but not more so than your character.
