Six Months After India’s Request, Malaysia Rejects Zakir Naik’s Extradition

“As long as he is not creating any problem, we will not deport him because he has been given permanent residency status,” said Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohammad. The 52-year-old controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik met the Malaysian Premier recently.

The Indian agencies were seeking his return in connection with his alleged hate speeches. He left India back 2016. The Malaysian government’s response on Zakir Naik has prompted Hansraj Ahir, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, to further ensure that Naik is not spared.

Though the Muslim preacher felt relieved and happy at this decision, the Indian government was far from satisfied. Undeniably, this decision has made Naik feel more optimistic and less fearful. His stay in Malaysia has proved to be fruitful.

The Indian foreign ministry’s request has been turned down after six months of requesting for his extradition issued in January this year. Both the countries were bound to comply with the terms of the extradition treaty. But no efforts from India seemed to be helpful in processing the extradition. Wanted for allegations of terrorism and money laundering, Naik seems to have found an abode in Malaysia. Let’s hope he doesn’t cause any trouble in the country.
