I have heard from many people that they don’t want to get entangled in politics. Most of the time, they aren’t really concerned with politics but with the manipulation of opinions, worthless discussions and all about leaders, scams, corruption, etc.
Politics is condemned as a dirty game. In our society, it is generally advised to keep away from it. For example, students are not supposed to get involved in politics. But if we continue to hate it and keep trying to escape from it, the ultimate result would be disastrous. We would run the risk of incompetent people making all the important decisions without being held accountable.
Plato said, “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.”
People have been given many kinds of rights – social, economic, as well as political. Every right implies a responsibility and every opportunity implies an obligation. People tend to forget their duties but remember their rights.
The government can make mistakes. It’s our duty to make the government realise its mistakes. It is our duty to remind them of the supremacy of the Constitution. The government and its representatives have been elected for our service.
No individual raindrop ever considers itself responsible for the flood but the whole flood is made up of small drops. We are like drops. Only by raising a collective voice can we make changes. Politics is not only about elections but also about public meetings, processions, slogans, demonstrations, etc.
Politics involves conflict regarding the allocation of resources. It is an instrument for resolving conflicts, for making progress and for pursuing the common good. Many aspects of our lives are determined by politics. For example, our education, employment, healthcare, our quality of life, etc.
To conclude, in a democracy, the voice of the people is extremely important. Without fear, we must criticise activities that are immoral. In a democracy, collective awareness is essential. Otherwise, it will become an authoritarian and despotic state, ruled through manipulation.
