Secularism In India: Myth Or Reality?

Secularism needs the State's approval right now, denying which may cost us heavily.

India is known as a secular nation across the world. Different ethnic groups came to India to plunder it but many of them settled here and contributed in its growth.  By the 42nd amendment in 1976, our Constitution makers incorporated three words in our constitution Socialist, Secular and Integrity. But now, newspapers and social media are full of that news which are posing a threat for Indian secularism. Our constitution makers never imagined in their dreams that this would be the scenario of our society in the future. Many freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar sacrificed their life to eradicate the discrimination on caste, creed and sex etc. bases from the society. We are going to celebrate our 72nd independence day next month. But the scenario is going to worsen with the time.

Love is a beautiful gift of God. Every creature falls in love without the barriers of caste, creed, religion and borders. But some people do not digest it and attack those couples who try to break the chains of orthodox traditions of the society. Sometimes the couples have to die. This is done in the name of honour killing and for the welfare of their community. These people do not afraid to attack those couples within the boundaries of courts. Even developed states of India like Gujarat also got the third rank in honour killings. According to figures from Union home ministry, Gujarat reported 2 cases of honour killings in 2014 which rose to 21 cases in 2015. Even the youth also participates in these heinous crimes. Youth is the pillar for the development of any society. If the youth lose their direction, how can that society progress?

It does not mean that our government has been indifference towards these heinous crimes. Under section 302 of IPC lots of criminals were punished. But the perpetrators do not have a feeling of repentance. This is the most shocking scenario. Is to make laws sufficient for the society? I personally believe we must start a campaign against it and must incorporate our youth in mass campaigns and make them aware about their duties towards the society.
