If You Want Change, Start By Knocking On Your Own Door

I know this is an old adage but for me, it’s the best way to initiate a step for any change. Candle marches, strikes or speeches will do no good. The most they can end up doing is setting a new precedent, which our system will fail to follow and ultimately, the responsibility will fall on the common man.

So why not save ourselves some time and commence with changing our own mentalities as well as that of our families, society or any person around us? Because the people who want to see the change need to also be that change. So, the next time you think of bringing about a change in the world, just start by knocking on your own door.

I’ll give an example of this. It’s about a short film “Nitishastra” in which Taapsee Pannu portrays a strong independent young woman who has a brother and a mother in her family. She owns defence institutes where she herself teaches self-defence to girls which is an admirable thing to do. After some time, she notices her brother getting into some bad company but like most of us, she doesn’t do much about it.

One day, she asks her brother to drop home one of her student as it was dark outside. But she didn’t know that her brother had become one of the people from whom she wanted to save the girl. So, the story continues as her brother rapes the girl and leaves her dying on the road and flies away from the city. There is more to the story you can give it a watch if you want.

My point is that the situation would have perhaps been different if she had paid attention to her own brother and what kind of a person he was becoming. So, make sure you start by knocking on your own door if you want to change the world.
