Just when you think government jobs will be there for you in the current wave of unemployment, an unexpected swing of events will force you to think otherwise. All 10,815 students, who appeared for an accountant’s post in the Goa government, failed.
The exam was held on January 1, 2018, and results of which were declared on August 21, 2018, is conducted every year by the Directorate of Goa go to fill 80 posts for accountants.
Prakash Pereia, the Director of Accounts said in a statement that the exam was not that difficult, and was similar to the exams conducted for government posts before. In a statement, he declared that not a single student secured the minimum passing marks required to clear the initial recruitment examination.
“I hereby declare that no candidate who appeared for the initial recruitment examination for the post of an accountant (direct recruits) held on January 01, 2018, has secured the minimum qualifying marks necessary for passing,” he said.
Out of these 80 vacancies, 43 were for general, 21 reserved for backward classes (OBC), 9 for Scheduled Tribes (ST), and 2 for Schedule Caste (SC) and children of freedom fighter, each. It is a written test which was introduced in the state in the year of 2012.
A former employee in a statement said that the quality of work is bad and the burden is entirely upon the proficiency of the candidates. He also said that some staff members even lack the basic knowledge of the subject, if we keep aside their qualification. The eligibility to appear for this exam was to have a bachelor’s degree in arts or commerce with economics. While all that being said, now to fill the vacant seats for the accountant’s position, the government will go through the process again and re-advertise the posts.
The candidates who applied for the exam are in a state of confusion. The state, which is under BJP rule, is being thrashed by the Congress for playing with the future of the candidates by rejecting them all. Amarnath Panjikar of Congress even questioned the possibility of such an incident happening, where not a single student passed the test. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAM) too blamed the government for making empty promises for jobs.
With no clarity on what’s next, the questions on the standard procedures by the government are covered by yet another doubtful layer.
