The Outrage Over Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Engagement Only Shows Our Hypocrisy

I feel India is a country of hypocrites. We don’t have to look for examples to prove my point. When Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas announced their engagement, everyone lost their mind and started brutally attacking and trolling them pointing out their age gap, the fact that he is 10 years younger to her.

The best part is that Alia Bhatt is younger than Nick Jonas, while Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are of same age. There wasn’t a single person outraging about their relationship, which clearly exposes the hypocrisy. Is this because Priyanka is a woman who defied societal norms to marry a younger guy? Let’s not forget that men in their 30s and 40s still prefer a relatively younger bride.

A woman’s choice of her life partner is making people lose their cool, and this shows that we still have a long way to go when it comes to respecting women and their choices. In between two consenting adults, how can age possibly be a barrier to a relationship? Probably, we Indians are only used to older men marrying younger girls. I don’t see anyone lashing out on that front?

Priyanka Chopra can be a former Miss World or a successful actor who has made her mark in Bollywood and Hollywood, but people will still judge her for making the choice of breaking away from the norm and getting engaged to a guy younger than her. Indians will troll, mock and attack you relentlessly but the same restriction doesn’t apply if it’s a man who makes the decision.

We don’t outrage and protest much against child marriages, but never forget to mock two independent adults making the consensual choice to be together.
