Moms and dads around the country are opening up their college savings accounts to help their young adults get ready for their higher education next year. The summer before Freshman year is the last real time parents will get to spend with their kids as kids. Coming back from college next summer, parents will meet a (potentially) more mature, confident adult.
But how did your student finally decide on the college they are looking forward to attending? Sure, you had input as a parent, but the real reasons your son or daughter selected the school of their choice might surprise you. Let’s look at 10 real reasons your child selected his or her dream school:
1. The Student Body
Heading to a college campus, it’s pretty easy to get a sense for the type of social atmosphere at the school. Are there a lot of tattoos, is the student body racially diverse? How many BMW’s, Mercedes and Lexus’ are parked in the student parking lot? If your teen is looking to party it up, then the more frat houses and sororities, the better.
2. Food, Glorious Food!
Who doesn’t like a good meal? Leaving mom’s home cooking behind is a lot easier to stomach when there’s a professional chef and catering team preparing daily meals for your student. Unfortunately, the cost of fringe benefits (like amazing food) adds to the total cost of education.
But don’t take my word for it. Former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, a current professor of Public Policy at UC Berkley, was quoted in a USNews.com article as stating that many campus amenities now “…resemble country clubs…These amenities are extremely expensive and contribute to the escalating cost of college. Moreover, they have very little or anything to do with the education of most young people.”
3. Campus-Based EMS Departments
For students considering a career in the health industry, the opportunity to volunteer as an on-campus EMT or medic could be a valuable opportunity to pad the resume before applying to Medical school. The campus extracurricular activities are important to students; even if they’re also incredibly expensive and sometimes duplicate existing community resources.
4. Insane Gyms with Rock Climbing Walls and Concierge Towel Service
Remember the field trip where your school went out and conquered the local rock climbing wall? In many of today’s universities, students need to go no further than the campus rock gym.
Yep: Campus. Rock. Gym. Students love the idea of staying fit in creative ways, and chances are that your son or daughter’s school has some killer fitness equipment to help the student body stay fit.
5. Opportunities for Start-Up Success
For students who grew up watching Shark Tank and seeing the Mark Zuckerbergs of the world create multi-billion dollar companies from a simple concept and idea, it’s tantalizing to follow in their footsteps. It seems like every day we’re hearing about massive buy-outs where investors and founders become richer than their wildest dreams.
6. Where are my friends going?
We’ll wrap this up with one of the biggest reasons your son or daughter chose a particular school; the desire to party it up with their best friends from high school. Let’s just hope, for the sake of your pocketbook, that the school of choice is an in-state, public institution.
Your future college students are looking to make amazing memories to enjoy best songs for learning and fulfill the promise that they’ve been sold since birth that college is the key to a bright future; full of fun pit stops along the way. The challenge as a parent will be to look deeper into the academic profile and educational quality of the institutions on your son or daughter’s short-list; more likely than not, your student will skip this step.
