For The 1st Time In India, Three Women Judges Are Serving The Supreme Court

Justice Indira Banerjee’s elevation has been the highlight of the recent appointments of judges in the Supreme Court. For the first time in the history of independent India, three women judges are serving the apex court at the same time – Justices R. Banumathi, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee (who is the 8th woman to become a judge at the Supreme Court). Before them, Justices Fathima Beevi, Sujata V. Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra and Ranjana Prakash Desai have passed notable verdicts as SC judges.

Justice Banerjee will hold her position for almost four years and is two years senior to Justice K.M. Jacob who has also been appointed to the Supreme Court.

Despite 22 judges, SC is still six judges short of meeting its requirement.
