Crime Against Women In India Has Been A Persistent Social Issue

In a Kaun Banega Crorepati episode, one of the contestants brought up the condition of women in our country. By delivering her self-written verses, she emphasised that no noticeable difference has been found in women’s situation from the time of Mahabharata to the present day. The National Crime Record Bureau report published in 2016, also confirmed this fact.

According to the bureau, at least two girls below the age of 18 years were being raped every hour and 44% of the kidnappings registered in the year 2016, were minor girls. This revelation came to light after a thorough research conducted by National Crime Record Bureau, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and ChildFund India.

Recounting her own experience as a bus conductor, she narrated an incident where she had to beat at least three men for their crude behaviour. She used the handheld ticket issuing machine for thrashing the rogue individuals. Her hatred against insensitive and notorious men was quite evident when she was talking to the KBC host. She categorically stated that a man could not bring change in his behaviour and attitude despite all the marvellous feats accomplished by the women.

Her anguish is genuine as a report about a 19-year-old girl who was abducted and gang-raped in Rewari district of Haryana surfaced on September 14. The girl was held by the boys in her village against her will while going to her coaching class. Hailing from Kosli in Rewari, the story of this victimised girl made it to national headlines, owing to her educational acumen(President Award) in the year 2016. While the Haryana government has assured justice to the victim, is this the cost one has to pay for getting their daughters educated under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign?
