Don’t Let Anyone Tell You That You’re Not Supposed To Cry Because You’re A Guy

As children, boys express themselves and otherwise cry when they have to. Under society's gendered upbringing, they become "Men" and keep their emotions to themselves to appear "strong".

Men are considered as the epitome of masculinity. A man is expected to be strong, fierce, afraid of absolutely nothing, sole earner of the family, the stronger sex and most importantly, they’re not expected to cry in any situations, no matter what.

And people who expect this are fools.

There is no reason as to why men are considered to be weak when they cry. They’re not weak. This beautiful species of Homo sapiens – Humans, as we’d like to call ourselves, are gifted with amazing traits known as feelings and emotions. Therefore, whatever this species feels or projects is all natural.

You don’t judge a man when he laughs or when he gets angry. But you judge him the moment he sheds a tear. You all shame him, you call him names, ridicule him, laugh at him, make fun of him, anything but understand him and understand the situation he’s going through.

A guy doesn’t portray his emotions much. Men, unlike women, are not vocal about their emotions. They’ve already hidden enough of their emotions, and the moment they shed a tear is when they’re in a situation where it’s too hard to bear.

From the moment men are born into this big bright world, the moment they make a sound that resembles a cry, they’re asked to stop. They’re hushed. Why? Because they’re men and men don’t cry. Men have been hearing this all their life, since the time they’ve opened their tiny eyes for the first time and barely started to breathe. Like, “Hush, you’re a boy and boys shouldn’t cry.”

The question is why not? Why aren’t boys allowed to cry? Don’t stop them. When they cry, let them. When they scream, let them. Don’t laugh at them or call them names. Don’t make fun of them. They’re not emotionless robots and it is definitely not ‘manly’ to hold those tears back.

People who think it is not manly should know that this will only make you feel like a wall with no emotions. You keep doing this and ultimately, you become heartless. And nobody wants that. Let those emotions flow out. You deserve to let them flow. You’re just as sensitive as others and that’s perfectly fine. So the next time you hear someone tell you that you’re not supposed to cry because you’re a guy, tell them to be in your situation and ask them if they would let it all flow or keep it in.
