Edible Water Bottles: The Next Step To Eliminate Plastic Pollution

Water is vital for human survival, and it has now become a necessity for us to choose a sustainable source and storage alternative for water. It is the need of the hour to think of the varied effects – an individual’s choice can bring to the environment. The most common and widely available option of carrying water in plastic bottles is one such choice.

There is little awareness about how plastic is ruining the environment and all living creatures at an alarming rate. The plastic bottles contain thermoplastic polymers that do not decompose and stay in the environment in some form, deteriorating the soil and aquatic biosphere. Not just the human race, but micro-organisms and the life underwater is also under serious threat. As a result of increasing commercialisation, scientists are continuously searching for renewable options to cope with the global waste management crisis.

With technological advancements, scientists have now succeeded in developing sustainable and affordable choices that can make our planet safer and a cleaner place in the near future. One such solution is edible water bottles. As interesting as it sounds, these edible water bottles are transparent spherical water capsules made of brown algae –  that completely rules out the need to carry plastic a water bottle. Named as “Ooho”, this bottle is super easy to consume and 100% edible. However, these edible water capsules are yet to come in the market. But such innovations have high hopes in rejuvenating the potential in the usage of seaweed.

According to a report by the United Nations, by 2025 about 1.8 billion people will live in water-stressed areas due to dangerous climate change. With these statistics, we are bound to bring in a culture of conserving and preserving our natural resources wisely. We have to switch to these alternatives to free our land and sea from harmful plastic – that has left beaches and rivers with tons of plastic waste. Inventions like Ooho can be a game changer in setting earth and our lives free from non-biodegradable products that can potentially darken the future of the coming generations. It is our responsibility to contribute towards a healthy environment and avoid buying a bottle of water from outside if we can.
