Delhi Government Schools Are Changing The Face Of Education In India

Education, the basic right of children, is slowly reaching them in the most effective and convenient way possible in Delhi. I suggest, if you live in the Capital, you should visit a government-run school in your neighbourhood.

On November 17, 2018, I got an opportunity to visit Rajkiya Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, West Vinod Nagar.

What I saw there was absolutely mind-blowing. I went to a private school myself, but the infrastructure, hygiene and system in these schools can easily compete with private ones. I always believed the stereotypes about government schools; indifferent teachers and disinterested students roaming about casually. But this visit changed my perception. And amidst all the chaos and the criticism that the State government is facing, I’d like to appreciate and acknowledge its efforts in this field.

The school had well lit and clean classrooms, hygienic washrooms, drinking water taps, regular cleaning staff etc. I even entered some classes that were going on and they were just perfect. Libraries had a very good system of dividing levels of reading in different colours for beginners, average and advanced readers and they had a large variety of books.

Cultural activities like music and dance were actively taught. There was also a swimming pool which was well maintained but obviously closed in this season. However, we constantly wondered why girls and boys were being taught in separate shifts in the same school.  Perhaps that is the easiest way to avoid co-ed problems, or maybe not.

What I concluded from my visit was that the government is working towards a lot of issues and their efforts aren’t going in vain.  What appealed to me the most about the school was the initiative of ‘The Wall Of Gratitude’ which motivates children to express their gratitude and affection for everyone around them.

The visit today made me happy. Education, the basic right of children, is slowly reaching them in the most effective and convenient way possible. I suggest you think over your preconceived notions about government schools as well after seeing these pictures.
