When an uninformed prospective student of this course hears its name, what comes to mind is a homely curriculum that teaches lessons on being a good ‘homemaker’ with women mostly, opting for it. Procedure
Within the first year of admission, students are exposed to all five areas and are helped to develop an interest in a particular field of their own choice. Subsequently, students can choose an area of specialisation on the basis of their merit as well as interest.
Future Prospects
This course provides the student with a number of diverse options after graduation, some of which are courses in Mass Communication, Social Work, Home Science, Human Resource Management, and Developmental Studies and Nutrition.
As per Garima, a student of BSc Home Science (Hons) at the Institute of Home Economics, this course has allowed her to explore many more academic options than before. She says, “At first, I wasn’t decisive about the course, but since I wished for DU to be my alma mater, I went ahead with any subject under BSc but as the year passed by, not for a moment did I regret my decision, as it allows me to explore all walks of life, and helped me to decide what I want to be.”
Now pursuing her specialisation in Development Communication & Extension, she says, “This course has taught me how to deal with everyday life and everyday people. I know how to talk and with what regard to which person, I know it because that’s what I’ve been taught. Providing a huge skyline to paint my rainbow in, this course has a huge scope of knowledge and employment for all aspirants.”
This course trains a student with a variety of applicable skills, allowing the student to carve out whatever niche they wish to. Instead of limiting, it actually lets a student expand their horizons and explore a plethora of postgraduate options.
Hence, from being a ‘home’ oriented course to a highly specialised professional course, BSc Home Science has come a long way. If you’re in class 12, and still confused, this might just be the right thing for you.
