8 Queer Movies To Celebrate 20-Gay-Teen!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or been drinking your worries away, you must be aware that we are very very close to the end of the fabulous year of 20gayteen.

What could be a better way to celebrate an amazing year than a queer movie marathon? Here are some movies/shows to celebrate our diversity and queerness!

1. LOVE, SIMON

The epic and most awaited gay drama of 2018, this movie is based on Becky Albertalli’s debut novel, Simon vs the Homo Sapien’s agenda. Be ready to shed some tears and laugh along the wonderful life of Simon Spier and his penpal Blue.

2. THE WAY HE LOOKS/ HOJE EU QUERO VOLTAR SOZINHO

This Brazilian movie can be easily the sweetest love story I’ve ever watched. The feature film was originally a short film by the name I don’t want to go back alone, which is also a highly recommended one and can be easily found on YouTube. The films are an excellent representation of the gay community and the specially abled.

3. BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER

This 1999 drama/comedy is most likely a lesbian classic. Although there is only a comical and unrealistic representation of conversion therapy, the movie is quite refreshing and a must watch. Especially, if you’re a sucker for a good laugh!

4. CALL ME BY YOUR NAME

Released last year, the movie received great attention in the Oscars. It is based on the novel by Andre Aciman. With an Italian background, you are most likely to fall in love with Timothee Chalamet’s character.

5. SKAM

The Norwegian teen drama is a must watch if you’re looking for a good teen representation of LGBTQ, mental health and faith. Divided into four seasons, Skam(translating to Shame) is an amazing show to binge watch. Season 3 is the gayest season, following the story of Even and Isak.

6. DON’T CALL ME SON/MAE HO SA UMA

The movie revolves around the androgynous main character Pierre, and his relationship with the birth mother and the woman who stole him. An exhilarating story of identity and self-love.

7. BOY ERASED

I have no idea why I’ve put this movie on the 7th number. It deserves to be on the top. Recently released, the movie is based on the memoir of Garrad Connley. Trust me, you are going to cry throughout the movie! This is no cutesy love story, so be prepared to watch the hardships of being in a gay conversion therapy.

8. HEARTBEATS/ LES AMOURS IMAGINAIRES

Another fantastic French indie film by Xavier Dolan, the movie revolves around the best friends pining after the same boy. Like every other Dolan movie, Heartbeats is packed with pure art. Be ready to lose your mind and get your heart broken by French curls!

There is an awful lot of undiscovered shows and movies with good LGBTQ representation, but due to pure procrastination, I have not able to review them all. But here are the honorary mentions that you should definitely check out!
