Delhiites, The Next Time You’re Tempted To Take Your Neighbour To Court, Try This Instead

We all tend to take up battles and suffer in the process of I versus them. Soon, our mental peace, money and energy are being invested in unworthy fights. Mediation provides you with a way. So, before you pick up your battles, consider mediation.

I have firsthand witnessed people coming to court with frivolous matters in anger, frustration and inability to realise and separate their interests from their perceived wants. The layman in the hope of justice goes to court but soon realises they have a long battle to fight.

But the important question is, is there any alternative? The answer is yes. Mediation is one such tool that can help the parties to the dispute to come to mutually acceptable solutions. Most of the problems before they turn into court battles are capable of being solved by an experienced mediator. The mediator doesn’t impose their opinion on the parties but helps them restore communication and think about their problems from the perspective of best interests than their want. The mediation not only ensures confidentiality but a private process that helps people to vent out their emotions and think objectively.

For the residents of Delhi, Delhi Dispute Resolution Society has ten centres spread out in Delhi. These centres are run by the Delhi government and the fee for the same is borne by the government with only a nominal fee being charged from a bank and other institutions.

Both, Pre-litigation Cases and Pending Litigation Cases can be taken up at the various Mediation Centers under Delhi Dispute Resolution Society (Regd.) Disputes like, neighbourhood disputes,consumer-related disputes, petty compoundable criminal cases, family and relationship matters, dishonour of cheque, land-related issues are capable of being solved by mediation.

One thing that we as a society have forgotten is solving our disputes with love, dialogue and most importantly, patience. We block the communications when we should actually talk. We swell in ego when we should let things go. We boil in anger when we should be calm.

Disputes are not limited to courts but span in every walk of our life. We have disagreements with our parents, colleagues at work etc. Some conflicts become so huge, or we make such a big deal out of it that we end up in a legal battle. The notion that law is the only way that can help us reach a decision has created a block in our mind that inhibits us from thinking creatively. The idea of solving problems on our own doesn’t occur to us.

So, choose your battles carefully!
