Should Sex Education Be Provided In Indian Schools?

In recent times, the topic of offering sex education in schools has come in to various debates, and has now become a controversial issue.

It is very common, now, to hear of more and more teens contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), or incidents of teenage pregnancies. Many students, and even parents, feels embarrassed about talking about sex. Due to a lack of knowledge about sex, many teenagers take part in unsafe activities, and end up spoiling their lives. Many girls do not even know about their menstrual cycle, and due to their lack of knowledge, they face many menstrual health problems.

Almost all young people derive their knowledge about sex either from their friends or by doing some sort of self-study. Many times, such informal ‘education’ misleads them, and results in solidifying the wrong information. Many people might become depressed because of the impact their actions have thanks to a lack of proper knowledge about sex. They surf through porn websites to substitute for the actual sex. But what they see in these ‘creative’ porn videos are not accurate when compared to actual life.

In my opinion, sex education should be part of the school education.

According to Advocates for Youth, “Accurate, balanced sex education – including information about contraception and condoms – is a basic human right of youth. Such education helps young people to reduce their risk of potentially negative outcomes, such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Such education can also help youth to enhance the quality of their relationships and to develop decision-making skills that will prove invaluable over life. This basic human right is also a core public health principle that receives strong endorsement from mainstream medical associations, public health and educational organizations, and – most important – parents.”

Sex education is important. This been proven time and time again. It does not encourage teenagers to have sex; it does quite the opposite. Every teenager should have sex education at the school level. It should be mandatory. Sex education has been shown to help students, not hurt them. It’s our fundamental duty as a society to educate the next generation. Currently, we are failing. So we would like people to come forward and speak about this openly and vote in the poll below:
