The Last Vow

He paid no heed to his mother,
Ahmed angrily slammed the door;
His friends were waiting at the gate,
He had vowed that it would be his last match.

He got up grudgingly and got dressed,
His mom was waiting for him downstairs;
She handed Mehmood a small bag, a gift;
He had vowed that it would be his last visit to his grandparents’.

His wife had pleaded with him for a month,
At last Hamid gave in and agreed to go;
They bade farewell to his parents,
He had vowed that it would be his last trip to his In-laws’.

He didn’t like the smell of the food,
Angry! he pushed it away and didn’t eat.
Hameed, his father, put his Pheran on and went out to get him some food;
He had vowed that it would be the last time he gave in out of love.

Hamaad was very passionate about business;
After a year’s persuasion, his father agreed; again!
His mother sold her precious jewelry even, a mother after all!
He had vowed that it would be his last attempt at business;

But who would have thought,
Who?
That they’d all end up in that bus;
Doomed!
Bound to disappear,
Vanish,
Forever;
Just like that business; that jewelry,
Just like them,
From our sight,
Not from our hearts though;
Never!

But yes,
Each one of them kept his word;
Before breathing their last,
They thanked their Lord;
For they had fulfilled their vow;
At last!

But how will they ever know?
Alas!
They are no more
They didn’t last.
