The Year 2059: One Of The Worst Nightmares I’ve Ever Had

My friends and I were busy chatting and laughing at some place that I am unable to recall. All of a sudden, the weather started changing, and I saw something scary rushing toward us. It looked like a  massive wave of water, and in the blink of an eye, the whole area was swallowed up in the deluge. In a desperate attempt to escape the devastation, people were running madly to take shelter in safe places.

I somehow managed to climb to the top of a tree. I could see the ground beneath the tree getting submerged in water. For a moment, I thought that I had saved my life, but soon something happened which made me shudder. I saw leaves of the trees, bushes, and plants drying up, as there was a sudden and extreme rise in the temperature. The terrifying sight of trees burning in flames sent shivers down my spine.

I also started feeling the heat of the fire on my skin. I remember telling my friends that it was the end of life on earth.  I took a mental note of the year and realized that all this was happening in 2059. The whole scenario was unnerving.

I woke up around 3 a.m. and saw the ceiling fan above my bed motionless. I thanked my stars, everything was alright. It was just a nightmare, and I was feeling hot because there was a power cut.

But, what if this nightmare comes true? Every day, more forests are being destroyed by us in the name of development and civilization.  Air, water, and soil are rapidly getting polluted. The environment is getting damaged and many species are under the threat of extinction. Scientists have estimated that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird, and mammal become extinct every 24 hours.

The natural calamities such as floods, droughts, earthquakes, etc have brought immeasurable tragedies. Even though mankind has reached the pinnacle of it’s scientific and technological achievement, it has failed to take precautionary measures to prevent or at least control such disasters. Can our advancement in technology prevent all these catastrophes? It can’t!

If we can’t reverse the damages done to nature, then it’s time we stop abusing it for the sake of our insatiable greed, or else we will soon become the cause of our own extinction. There is no politician or billionaire, powerful enough, to stop this from happening.

It was one of my worst nightmares, and I hope it never becomes a reality.
