Explained: How Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s New Green Deal Affects US Politics

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has proposed a resolution named Green New Deal which aims to take the United States of America to greater heights and solve economic problems. This deal focuses on economic and climate reforms which the country needs to execute to ensure sustainability for the country.

It is an ambitious blueprint for the future which getting support from Democrats except a few. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a young leader identifies herself as a democratic socialist which means her programs will be centered around social welfare.

What’s In The Deal

1. Achieving net-zero emissions until 2050. This is a very important step regarding climate reforms. This means that this deal promotes the use of alternative methods to ensure energy production. Climate change is emerging as the biggest problem in the world and this target has been set to ensure reduction in temperature of climate.

2. Creating millions of high wage jobs in the USA to increase employment rate. There have been reports suggesting that wealth of the rich is increasing and they are now controlling more economy creating an imbalance.

3. Clean air and water for the public. This deal wants to ensure that the general public of USA gets easy access to clean water and air.

4. Renewing infrastructure to make them environment-friendly.

How It Affects US Politics

US politics is witnessing a shift in ideology. More socialist approaches are coming from the democratic front. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders are some of the leaders who support socialist policies of economy.

As wages go low, the welfare state is always appreciated which some of these democrats follow. Out of 9 presidential candidates till now, seven have supported the deal, one is still unclear and one is against the deal. Republicans have criticized the deal by saying that this bill will require a lot of funds and the funds source has not been cleared by the deal makers.

It remains to be seen how this deal plays it in election but one thing is sure that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has left her mark on the political discourse and it will be interesting to how Republicans respond to this.
