7 Things You Should Keep In Mind As A First-Time Voter

As the 2019 Lok Sabha elections are commencing, newspapers and news channels are full with stories of election campaigns and rallies. Every election process has new voters added to the list.

Since 15 million people will be voting for the first time, it is crucial to make an informed choice.

To make an informed choice, it’s important to tick off certain basics.

Here’s a list of some things you need to keep in mind as a first-time voter:

1. Select Your Preference Carefully

Before voting, you must keep in mind that you are going to take part in a procedure that will select the future government, and the leaders you’ll elect will make decisions on behalf of you and the country. So, make your choice after going through the manifestos and previous works of different candidates and their respective parties. If your parents vote for a particular party, that doesn’t mean that you should also vote for the same. You have the right to make your own choice.

2. Know The Policies Of Your Candidate

Make sure that before voting you read all the policies offered by the candidate you are going to vote for. Compare their policies with those offered by other candidates and then make an informed choice. An informed choice lays the foundation for a responsible democracy.

3. Carry Your Voter ID Card

Before leaving your house for the voting booth, make sure that you have your voter card with you. Else, it’s simple: you won’t be allowed to vote.

4. Know About The EVM And How It Operates

Use the EVM machine carefully. Don’t get confused with the buttons. All you need to do is press the button that carries the symbol of the political party you wish to vote for. Some people get puzzled with the symbols. Always remember the correct symbol of the political party. And, in case you don’t wish to vote for any of the candidates, you have the option of choosing the NOTA.

5. Beware Of Hooliganism

It usually happens during elections that some mischievous people create disruptions by making foolish comments and will try to use violence to influence your voting preference. Beware of these people, and if something like this happens, report to the officer present.

6. Don’t Vote Emotionally

Usually, candidates appeal for votes in the name of religion and culture. You need to make sure that you don’t get carried away by such appeals. Your vote should only have the backing of your judgment, rationality and political vigilance. Try and ascertain their merits on tangible aspects like their economic plans and policies, communal harmony and budget for healthcare and education.

7. Get Your Vote Enrolled At The Correct Constituency

Before applying as a voter, mark the current constituency on the form. Understand the various divisions as to how areas are divided into different constituencies and how voting happens. Going wrong with the name and details of the constituency might get your name off the voters list.

These are only some basics that should get you covered right before you caste your first vote. Placing your vote gives you a sense of fulfillment (of duty) and responsibility (of taking part in choosing your leaders)

Lastly, don’t forget to capture the moment of your first voting experience ever!
